Projects

IEK-7 is involved in and coordinates numerous projects with partners in Germany and abroad. This includes collaborations within the Helmholtz Association, as well as with other research institutions, universities and industry partners. Projects are usually part of and funded by the R&D programmes for atmospheric and climate research of the Helmholtz Association (HGF), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Research Foundation (DFG), the European Union (EU) and the European Space Agency (ESA). The results contribute to climate programmes, for example those of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Remote Sensing of Climate Processes in the Atmosphere with High Spatial Resolution

On 25 and 26 February 2009, the European Space Agency's (ESA) Programme Board for Earth Observation (PB-EO) selected three Earth observation missions for which feasibility studies were to be carried out between 2009 and 2012. These three proposed missions were chosen from among twenty-six proposals in a selection process which started in 2005. One of the shortlisted projects is the PREMIER mission focusing on studying the interactions between chemistry and climate.

Geophysica

Use of the Russian High-Altitude Research Aircraft Geophysica for German Atmospheric and Climate Research

IEK-7 leads an initiative aimed to keep the Russian high-altitude research aircraft Geophysica available for German atmospheric research. Together with the Russian partners (Myasishchev Design Bureau [MDB], Central Aerological Observatory [CAO]), a sustainable plan for its possible use during the next five to eight years was drawn up in 2010.

HALO - High Altitude and LOng range research aircraft

Establishment of a Scientific Infrastructure for the Helmholtz Association's Climate Initiative (HALO Instrumentation)

IEK-7 will make a significant contribution to the instrumentation of the new German research aircraft HALO (High-Altitude and Long-Range Research Aircraft) by developing an ice–water package (Lyman-α hygrometer, tunable diode laser for water vapour, particle measurements) and the novel remote sensing instrument GLORIA-AB (up to 40 trace gases, aerosols, clouds).
