Impact and Outreach

In addition to our scientific publications, numerous contributions were made to reports by WMO (World Meteorological Organization) and SPARC (a project of the World Climate Research Program), which not only transfer knowledge to society but are also consulted by policy makers. IEK-7 scientists served here as authors and reviewers. Furthermore, we exploit our involvement in the Earth System Knowledge Platform (ESKP), which was established by the Helmholtz Association’s research field of Earth and Environment to coordinate the transfer of knowledge on the Earth System. A project was set up to display current Arctic stratospheric ozone loss and to explain its potential impact to the interested general public. In this project, we created a website ( to show real-time ozone and UV-index simulations by CLaMS throughout the Arctic winter.

Training for doctoral researchers at IEK-7 is highly structured. All doctoral researchers participate in HITEC, a Helmholtz Graduate School of IEK and the five partner universities Aachen, Bochum, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Wuppertal, focusing on energy and climate research. IEK-7 contributes to the specialized part of HITEC by organizing an annual summer school on atmospheric chemistry and dynamics (in cooperation with IEK-8) and regular lectures and seminars at the University of Wuppertal (3 lecturers are appointed at the University of Wuppertal, 1 lecturer at the University of Mainz). New is an autumn school on data sciences. In addition, HITEC-days on the role of the atmosphere in the climate system and HITEC-labs on aircraft measurements in the UTLS are organized by IEK-7. In addition, IEK-7 contributes to the education of MSc-students and vocational training, e g. of Mathematical Technical Software Engineers.
