Numerical modelling of atmospheric physics and chemistry provides both key information on so far poorly understood processes and feedback mechanisms, as well as planning and analysis tool for field missions.

In addition, only three-dimensional models are able to forecast the chemical composition of the atmosphere and predict its evolution under future scenarios. This holds also for calculations describing the impact of different future energy consumption projections on air quality and climate.

At IEK-8 mainly three model systems are used:

  • EMAC
    a global Earth System Model that is used for both chemical process studies and for Chemistry-Climate simulations,

    a global chemistry climate model with detailed representation of gas phase, aerosol, and cloud processes,

    a continental-to-local scale chemistry transport model, which provides operational forecasts of air quality for Europe and selected regions (e.g. in MACC) , with the focal application to fuse model results with observations by data assimilation and inverse modelling,

Further, several detailed process models are applied, such as EASY, which is predominantly used for the evaluation of chemical parameters gained in the SAPHIR chamber.

Working groups

  • Regional and Inverse Modelling
    Highly resolving numerical simulations and analyses for chemistry and transport of reactive trace gases and aerosols by combining models with observations.

  • Global Modelling
    Simulations and analyses for understanding the chemical composition of the atmosphere and its change subject to various climate forcing.
