Nitrogen Oxide Chemistry

The working group "nitrogen oxide chemistry" is taking measurements of the distribution as well as the temporal evolution of NOx concentrations by using mobile platforms, e.g. with a test vehicle, a research aircraft or a zeppelin. The influence of nitrogen oxides on the chemistry of free radicals in the atmosphere are then analyzed using global and local photochemistry models.

The group is also involved with the characterization of aerosols from combustion processes that can escape into the atmosphere. In addition, technical developments for the retention of soot by catalytic purification of exhaust gases using nanoparticles (Catalytic Oxidation and diesel particulate filter JUDIT) and improvements for the analysis of hydrocarbons by use of nanoparticles in gas chromatographic methods (NanoPlot) are developed.
