Kopernikus Supports Transformation of Energy Sector

Kopernikus project „Power-to-X“: Flexible use of renewable resources – research, validation and implementation of „Power-to-X“ concepts (P2X)

The „Energiewende“ provides the expansion of renewable energies. To use the opportunities associated with this transformation and minimize their risks, it requires the development of economic concepts for usage and storage of electricity from fluctuating renewable energy sources. These concepts are summarized under the term „Power-to-X“. They show a special potential to reduce the use of fossil fuels in the essential sectors of the German industrial location, namely power and energy, transportation and traffic and chemicals.
The Kopernikus project “Power-to-X” faces this challenge by creating points of interconnection between energy supply and material value creation.

Prof. Rüdiger-A. Eichel is a member of the coordinating group. Together with Prof. Walter Leitner (RWTH Aachen) and Prof. Kurt Wagemann (DECHEMA e.V.), he makes strategic decisions, controls he project development and is responsible for the budget plan of the entire consortium.
The Coordination Group combines University (RWTH) and major research institutions (FZJ) with industry and society (DECHEMA). Therefore, the team can rely on institutional cooperations (JARA Energy) and common experience in the coordination of major projects (as CO2Net, SYNFLOW, ConNeCat).
Forschungszentrum Jülich is the submitting agency and provides with Prof. Eichel the deputy speaker of the Kopernikus project “P2X”. Furthermore, he is incumbent on the function of external representation, as well as the communication to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the project executing organization and the research clusters FC-A1-3 with a focus on the conversion of electrical energy into material resources.
Within this topic, the high-temperature co-electrolysis of carbon dioxide and water vapor provides a technology for the direct conversion of electrical current into syngas. An attractive advantage of the technology is the ability to generate defined synthesis gas compositions that are relevant for industrial applications (1 <H2: CO <3) by variation of the operating parameters (temperature, current, reactant gas).
Prof. Eichel is coordinator of the FC-A3 “High-temperature co-electrolysis for synthesis gas production”. Together with the IEK-1, -2, 3, -STE, DECHEMA Research Institute, German Aerospace Institute, Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials, Wuppertal Institute, and industry partners, we will meet the challenges of material development and improvement, elucidation of reaction- and degradation mechanisms, process optimization in cells and stacks altogether framed by technical and socio-economic systems analysis encounter.
