Long-Lived Lightweight – New Silicon Battery

Recently founded subinstitute explores fundamentals of new electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems

Silicon does not only provide the basis for computer chips. It is also a promising material for future high-performance energy storage systems. In the long term, silicon-air batteries could replace lithium-ion batteries in various applications. They are regarded as particularly environmentally friendly, highly efficient and insensitive to external influences. The subinstitute "Fundamental Electrochemistry" recently established at Jülich will further refine the battery materials in order to develop this novel type of battery to market maturity.
