Cooperations

IEK-9 is partner in various collaborative research programs of the Helmholtz Association. Furthermore, IEK-9 coordinates several major national consortia, cooperates with national and international partners in academia, large-scale facilities and industry and is incorporated in various world-leading strategic research networks in the areas of electrochemical energy conversion and storage technologies.

At the research area Energy, the Helmholitz Assocation focuses its research activities to develop a sustainable energy supply system. IEK-9 focuses its activities to the research program Storage and Cross-linked Infrastructures (SCI) within the topics "Electrochemical Energy Storage", "Electrolysis and Hydrogen", as well as "Fuel Cells". In the framework of the SCI-program, IEK-9 cooperate with the following researchers:

The Helmholtz-Institut Münster (HI-MS) for Ionics in Energy Storage focuses its research on the development of high-performance electrolytes for batteries. At HI-MS, scientists from IEK-9 cooperate with the following groups:

BMBF

In the "Kopernikus projects for the Transition of the Energy System", technological and economic solutions for the transformation of the energy system are jointly being developed by science, industry and civil society. The Kopernikus project "Power-to-X - Flexible Use of Renewable Resources" is developing technologies that convert electricity from renewable sources into chemical energy carriers and energy-rich chemical products. This will allow the harnessing of renewable energy in the form of tailor-made automotive fuels or in high added-value chemical products. Within the framework of Kopernikus P2X, scientists of IEK-9 cooperate among others with the following working groups and industrial companies:

JARA Energy

The Jülich-Aachen Research Alliance (JARA) is the strategic alliance of university and non-university research between RWTH Aachen and Forschungszentrum Jülich. At the focus of the section JARA-Energy is the investigation of a sustainable energy generation and usage.

    JARA Energy

TMFB_RWTH

The Cluster of Excellence “Tailor-made Fuels from Biomass” (TMFB) develops new alternative fuels from biomass which will not be competing with the food chain. The vision of the cluster of excellence is to develop 3rd generation of biofuels, that are tailor-made for novel low-temperature combustion engine processes with high efficiency and low pollutant emissions.

P2F

The project “Power-to-Fuel” (P2F) is part of the Zukunftskonzept of the German excellence initiative (DFG). Its vision is the establishment of a compe-tence center for the research field "power-to-Fuel". A central challenge of P2F is the conversion of re-newable electricity into the energy of chemical bonds. On long-term view, the intention is to achieve the directly electro catalytic reduction of CO2, which requires fundamental research.

The Forschungsverbund Erneuerbare Energien (FVEE) is a nationwide cooperation of non-university research institutes with focus on technologies for renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy storage and an optimized coaction of technological and socio-economic system components. Overall goal is the transformation of the energy supply towards a sustainable energy system.

EERA

The European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) is an alliance of European public research centers and universities, elaborating the European Union’s Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan). IEK-9 is involved in two joint research programs -  FC/H2 and Storage. EERA closely cooperates with European industrial platforms to align research and innovation priorities.

The Energy Materials Industrial Research Initiative (EMIRI) is driving forward research and innovation in the field of advanced materials for low-carbon energy applications. EMIRI brings together research, industry and trade organizations.
