To understand the mechanisms defining the function and dysfunction of proteins, we investigate their structures and ligand interactions at high spatial resolution and by quantitative means, e.g. with NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy, as well as simulations. A special focus lies on proteins involved in neurodegenerative and infectious diseases. In the area of Alzheimer’s disease we have also developed a clinical strategy, with new approaches in therapy and diagnostics that target Amyloid β oligomers.
