European Research Council approves Advanced Grant

The European Research Council (ERC) approved the Advanced Grant for the study of the production of polarised antiprotons for the next five years.

Starting on May 2010 the European Research Council supports the studies of the "Production of polarized antiprotons" (POLPBAR) amounting to 2.45 Millions Euro. Principal investigator is Prof. Dr. Hans Ströher (IKP-2 institute leader) together with his working group in collaboration with Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Russia and Universita degli Studi di Ferrara, Italy. Together they setup and run the PAX experiment, first at COSY in Jülich and later at the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) at CERN.

Processes capable of polarising a proton (at COSY) or an antiproton beam (at CERN) will be examined. Polarising means that the spin of the individual (anti)protons are oriented mainly in one spatial direction.

Antiproton beams with sufficiently large polarisation ratios will permit an insight into up to now unexplored regions of the spin structure of nucleons at FAIR.
