Exotic Atoms

Exotic atoms, where electron shells are replaced by a heavier negatively charged particle like muons, pions, or antiprotons, cover dimensions ranging from the atomic down to the nuclear scale. For elementary systems, e.g. pionic hydrogen, the pion-nucleon scattering lengths are directly accessible by means of X-ray spectrocsopy.
