Workshop "BigBrain and its applications"

Picture of Big Brain

March 31 - April 1, 2015
Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany

We are pleased to announce a workshop on BigBrain and its applications, to be held in Jülich on March 31st, - April, 1st, 2015. The workshop will last 1.5 days, with informal reception on Tuesday evening and a full-day session on Wednesday, April 1st.

Reference brains are indispensable tools in brain mapping, enabling the integration of multimodal data into an anatomically realistic standard space. In a joint effort, researchers from McGill University in Montreal and the Research Centre in Jülich therefore developed a 3D model of the human brain in extremely high resolution – the „Big Brain“ (Amunts et al., Science 2013), which is based on 7404 digitalized histological cuts. This so far unique reconstruction is available as a free tool and offers matchless neuroanatomical insight as well as the possibility to verify hypotheses.

In this workshop, we will discuss recent scientific progress based on this newly available reference brain, the current state and version of the Big Brain dataset, reasonable directions for future developments and applications, and provide a common platform for data sharing and discussion.

We welcome abstracts of current work and/or short proposals for future initiatives related to such high-resolution reference brains from interested participants. The workshop will be restricted to ~30 attendees, so as to foster freeform discussion and exchange of ideas. Topics to be considered will include:

  • Technical or methodological issues related to the Big Brain, especially (but not necessarily) concerning registration, segmentation, and visualization
  • Scientific applications of high-resolution reference brains
  • Teaching proposals

Please send your 1-page abstract/proposals to s.hennen@fz-juelich.de by February 20th, 2015.
