The human brain is structurally and functionally heterogeneous and individually different. This is very important for the understanding of brain diseases as well as aging and evolution. In order to map the complex organization of the brain, a three-dimensional model of the brain is needed that brings together structural and functional organization principles across the different scales in a multi-modal atlas. This model will help to reveal the neurobiological basics of mental capacities and their individual facets and also enable the characterization of the underlying mechanisms.


The Institute "Structural and Functional Organization of the Brain" (INM-1) develops such an atlas based on cyto- and receptor architectonic, genetic and functional data, as well as PLI-based maps of the connection architecture (the connectivity of different brain regions). The central element is the "Big Brain", a 3D-reconstructed histological data set with a spatial resolution of 20 microns. The analysis of the vast amounts of data is made possible by image analysis, artificial neural networks and supercomputing.

Maps of the human cerebral cortex, subcortical nuclei and fiber tracts are developed based on architectonical and functional criteria and made available to the scientific community (JuBrain cytoviewer, SPM toolbox). These maps are part of the HBP Human Brain Atlas.
