Short-range Spin Correlations in Molecular Magnet {Mo72Fe30}

The spin-frustrated molecular magnets have attracted intense interest. As a molecular analogue of the kagome lattice, {Mo72Fe30} is one of the largest molecular magnets synthesized to date and represents a  highly  frustrated  spin structure.  We  investigated the magnetic ground state of {Mo72Fe30} by means of diffuse neutron scattering with polarization analysis. We explain the obtained magnetic diffuse scattering successfully within a three-sublattice spin model, which therefore proves to be a good approach to the magnetic ground state of {Mo72Fe30}.

Acceleration of Membrane Dynamics Adjacent to a Wall

The dynamics of a lamellar induced microemulsion adjacent to a planar hydrophilic surface (45ns) were found to be three times faster com- pared to the bicontinuous bulk structure (133ns). For these investigations the Grazing Incidence technique for Neutron Spin Echo Spectroscopy (GINSES) has been developed to resolve the depth dependent near surface dynamics. The observation is rationalized in terms of membrane hydrodynamics, where the surface reflected flow fields lead to a cross over from classical to confined fluctuations, and faster dynamics on large length scales (also known as ʻlubricationʼ) are predicted.

Hydrogen Release from Sodium Alanate Observed by Time-resolved Neutron Backscattering

Time-resolved quasielastic measurements on the backscattering spectrometer SPHERES were used to monitor the decomposition kinetics of sodium alanate, NaAlH4  →Na3AlH6 → NaH.
Both reaction steps were found to be accelerated by autocatalysis, most likely at the surfaces of Na3AlH6 and NaH crystallites.

 Supramolecular Assemblies Through Combining Noncovalent Interactions

Supramolecular nanoscale assemblies have great potential in fields ranging from medicine to nanotechnology. It is thus of interest to develop new concepts towards self-assembly. In particular the combination of different types of interactions has not yet been fully exploited for a targeted supramolecular nano-assembly design. Herein, we describe the formation of polyelectrolyte-porphyrin networks in aqueous solution based on a combination of ionic and π−π interaction. In a second system, the interaction of a self-complementary bis-zwitterion motif is combined with metal coordination for the formation of pH-responsive supramolecular polymers from low-molecular mass building blocks. In both cases, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) played a crucial role.

 Investigation of Ruthenium-Based Complexes for Anti-Cancer Therapy

A series of amphiphilic ruthenium-based molecules with potential anti-cancer activity has been synthesized and characterized. The SANS investigations at KWS-2 have revealed a rich variety of aggregates, spanning from vesicles to cubic bicontinuous phases, with a good antiproliferative activity.
