Neutron Scattering and Soft Matter (JCNS-1/ICS-1)

We investigate structure and dynamics of soft matter using neutrons, develop neutron scattering instruments and make them available to external researchers in the JCNS.

Quantum Materials and Collective Phenomena

We develop and use scattering techniques to understand the structural and magnetic order, fluctuations and excitations in magnetic systems and in highly correlated electron systems at the atomic level.

MLZ Outstation

At this its biggest outstation, JCNS currently operates 11 scattering instruments partly in cooperation with the Technische Universität München (TUM) and RWTH Aachen University. More

ILL Reaktor

ILL Outstation

At the worlds highest flux research reactor at ILL in Grenoble, JCNS operates the Collaborative Research Group instruments, IN12, IN22 and D23, in a consortium with the French CEA. This gives German user groups access to world-class instruments for structural and dynamical studies.


SNS Outstation

At the first Megawatt Spallation Neutron Source SNS in Oak Ridge, USA, JCNS operates a next generation spin echo spectrometer with unprecedented resolution and dynamical range. Through this contribution to the instrumentation, German users have access to the instrument suite of this unique source. More...


Technical Services and Administration

At JCNS, "Technical Services and Administration" support our scientists in designing and constructing instruments. Technicians, engineers and our administration staff provide fast and unbureaucratic support. IT specialists advise our researchers and develop drivers and software.
