Interface of Electronics and Biology
The above image shows a nerve cell (light brown) on a field effect transistor.  Scientists from the Peter Grünberg Institute are working on combining the intelligence of living cells with electronic data systems.  They aim to find out how possible interfaces between electronics and biology could come about.  A better understanding of this area should help them one day to develop, for example, prostheses which can be controlled directly through the nervous system of the patient, an artificial retina or even biochips which can quickly and reliably detect trace substances in air or water.
