For its research towards molecule-based nanoelectronics, the department Functional Nanostructures at Surfaces (PGI-3) offers the following PhD projects (Dr. rer. nat.) at present:

Tailoring the Interaction in Heteroepitaxial Stacks of 2D Materials and Molecular Layers: Graphene, Hexagonal Boron-Nitride, and Molecular Films (two positions)

PhD position: Atomically precise manipulation of molecules with a low-temperature scanning probe microscope (SPM) in three dimensions

Furthermore, we permanently offer PhD projects (Dr. rer. nat.) in the fields of

  • Ordering phenomena and self-assembly of molecules at complex organic-inorganic interfaces,
  • Microscopic, Spectroscopic and Structural Investigations of Multinary Organic Films,
  • STM-based Quantum Transport through Molecular Wires, and
  • Scanning Probe Microscopy of Semiconductor Nanostructures

All projects are funded by the program "Fundamentals of Future Information Technology", a strategic research initiative of the Helmholtz Gemeinschaft deutscher Forschungszentren, carried out by the Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ). The FZJ is one of the largest German research centers. It offers excellent opportunities for research in an international environment. Within the Jülich-Aachen Research Alliance (JARA), founded under the auspices of the German Excellence Initiative, it is closely linked to the RWTH Aachen University.

Salaries are competitive (TvöD + allowance depending on the candidate's profile), teaching load is low and dissertations are usually completed within three years. Equal opportunities are a cornerstone of our staff policy for which we have received the "TOTAL E-QUALITY" award.


Candidates with an MSc or equivalent degree in Physics or a related discipline, with an overall grade of at least "good", are strongly encouraged to apply.
