Physics and Chemistry of Organic Adsorbates

Welcome to the research group of Stefan Tautz

Our research is devoted to the interface between soft and hard condensed matter. On the soft matter side, we concentrate on π-conjugated organic molecules that have application potential in molecular nanoelectronics, while on the hard matter side it is mainly metal surfaces that we are interested in. We also investigate hybrid materials that consist of both organic and inorganic components. Because charge transport and switching are the most important functions in the context of molecular nanoelectronics, transport experiments on single molecules and nanostructures are central issues on our agenda.

Fields of research:

  • Interaction of organic molecules with surfaces
  • Structure of organic thin films
  • Metal-molecule hybrid systems
  • Surface-adsorbed molecular switches
  • SPM-based single molecule spectroscopy
  • Quantum transport through molecules
  • Instrument and software development

Current projects:

Methods and instrumentation:

  • High Resolution Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (HREELS)
  • Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (UPS, XPS)
  • Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED)
  • Variable and Low Temperature Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy (STM)
  • Normal Incidence X-Ray Standing Waves (at synchrotron sources):
We regularly perform experiments at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble at beamline ID32. In collaboration with other groups, we are performing synchrotron work at various sources.
