Interaction of shaped electron wavefunctions with light and matter

General Information

Scientific background

In recent years, new methods have been demonstrated to shape the wavefunction of the electron and to control its interaction with light and matter. Electron beam shaping can be performed by patterning the thickness of a thin silicon nitride film through which the electron passes, or by forming a desired electric or magnetic potential using miniature wires and coils. New types of electron beam shapes have been formed, including electron vortex beams, self-accelerating Airy beams and non-diffracting Bessel beams. These electron beams provide exciting opportunities to study the interaction of electrons with light and matter. In a recent related development, laser-pumped nano-fabricated dielectric structures have been used to accelerate electron beams, thereby opening new options for chip-scale accelerators and miniature X-ray light sources. The goal of this seminar is to provide a platform for presenting recent results and stimulating discussions between researchers in this field.

Structure of the seminar

Selected topics will be presented in talks and poster sessions which will be introduced by one-minute poster flashes. The three best posters will receive a prize and the winners will be invited to present their work in a short talk (15 min. talk plus 5 min. discussion. There will be plenty of time to discuss and study special topics in smaller groups.
