Our efforts are focused on the research and development of durable electronic sensors for the detection of minute amounts of biochemicals in the environment and body fluids. This includes (i) the development and characterization of suitable thin film compounds (e.g. complex oxide films), (ii) the preparation and optimization of micro- and nanosize electronic and electrochemical devices (e.g., Field-Effect Transitors (FETs), Metal Electrode Arrays (MEAs), break-junctions and nanofluidic systems) and (iii) the development of various experimental technologies (ranging from microwaves and cryogenic to structural and surface analysis).
Our research encompasses the following topics:
Sensitive electronic devices that can be fabricated using CMOS technology can provide direct, real–time monitoring of biological processes. In addition, local electric fields generated by these devices can influence biological processes and interactions.

Our research activities are focused on the development of complex oxides thin film systems
(ranging from dialectric and, ferroelectric to high-Tc
), the analysis, understanding and engineering of their physical and electronic properties, and their application in the field of microwave and sensor devices
for bio - chemical and electronic applications.

In contrast to bulk ferroelectrics, thin film ferroelectrics can be integrated into small complex thin film devices. As a result an improved or novel functionality in the form of microwave or sensor devices can be achieved. In particular, epitaxially-grown thin films offers the possibility to modify the dielectric or ferroelectric properties to a certain degree. Due to the vast enhancement of the permittivity in strain engineered ferroelectrics, field focusing thin film devices have been designed that can serve as sensors for chemical solutions or biological objects. Due to their size these electric field sensors can be operated up to the high GHz range.
The development of sensor devices is based on our continuous improvement of the technologies and tools in fields ranging from deposition processes, structural, electronic and microwave characterization and cryogenics, through to surface analysis and cell compatibility tests.
