Virtual Institute for Topological Insulators

Funding for new Virtual Institute approved

Jülich, June 29, 2012: Coordinated by Forschungszentrum Jülich a new Virtual Institute will start working. At the Virtual Institute for Topological Insulators (VITI) novel materials with high potential for applications in information technology will be investigated.

Beside Jülich, RWTH Aachen University, Würzburg University and the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology (SIMIT) are members of VITI. The Helmholtz-Association funds the project with 600.000 Euro annually, 300.00 Euro are provided by the VITI partners. Topological insulators are very promising materials for electronic devices employed in future ultrafast computers or smart phones. The material might also pave the way for novel spin electronic devices and by that enable energy efficient “green” information technology.
