Europe’s First Supercomputer Reaches 1 ExaFLOP/s

JUPITER at Forschungszentrum Jülich has become the first supercomputer in Europe to reach the milestone of 1 ExaFLOP/s – equivalent to one quintillion, or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 computing operations per second. At the same time, JUPITER ranks as the fourth-fastest supercomputer in the world and the most energy-efficient system in the Exascale class.

Inauguration of Jade and Ruby Quantum Processors

The High-Performance Computing and Quantum Simulator hybrid (HPCQS) project has reached a major milestone with the inauguration of two Pasqal quantum processors —Jade and Ruby— respectively situated at Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) and Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA).

ERC Consolidator Grant for Dr. Felix Gunkel and “Scrambled Oxs”

Dr. Felix Gunkel from the Peter Grünberg Institute (PGI-7) at Forschungszentrum Jülich has been awarded a Consolidator Grant by the European Research Council (ERC). It aims to use a new material design to develop particularly stable and efficient materials for water electrolysis – a key process for the environmentally friendly production of hydrogen.

Astrid Lambrecht Appointed to German Council for Scientific Information Infrastructures

The Joint Science Conference (GWK) has appointed Prof. Astrid Lambrecht to the German Council for Scientific Information Infrastructures (RfII). The RfII advises the federal and state governments as well as scientific institutions on the further development of scientific information infrastructures and on issues related to the digital transformation in science.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Inclusion in Everyday Working Life

On 3 December, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Forschungszentrum Jülich is focusing on the working conditions of employees with disabilities. The centre understands inclusion as part of a continuous process in which conditions are designed so that all staff can perform their tasks as independently as possible and in line with their abilities.

Our 3 strategic research priorities

Information

The priority of information combines Jülich research in three areas: simulation and data science in high-performance-computing (HPC), brain research, and research on bio- and nanoelectronic information technologies of the future. Quantum technologies are another priority at Jülich.

Energy

Jülich energy research concentrates on an energy system based on renewable energy. Scientists research technologies on all scales – from the atomic level right up to industrial innovations – covering the entire value chain from basic to applied research.

Bioeconomy

The sustainable bioeconomy is a biobased circular economy that does away with fossil resources and utilizes renewable resources instead. Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich are developing new value creation processes.

As a founding member of the Helmholtz Association, we are part of the largest German research organization and contribute our top-class expertise to four of the six Helmholtz Research Fields: Energy, Matter, Information, and Earth & Environment.

At Jülich, we conduct research in the fields of digital transformation, climate protection, the energy transition, and the sustainable circular economy. Our research strengthens the technological and digital sovereignty of our country. It is important to me to use the potential that arises from scientific findings and innovations for practical application.
