Prof. Dr. Sebastian M. Schmidt

Prof. Dr. Sebastian M. Schmidt (born in 1967) has been a member of the Board of Directors of Forschungszentrum Jülich since 1 November 2007.

From 2002 to 2006, Prof. Schmidt worked as a research representative and then as director at the Helmholtz Association's Head Office.

Sebastian Schmidt studied at the University of Rostock and in Dubna, Russia, and completed his degree in physics as a "Diplom-Physiker" in 1993.

In 1995, he completed his doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) in theoretical physics at the University of Rostock, and in 2001, he obtained his habilitation at the universities of Tübingen and Rostock. His main area of research is quantum statistics with applications in quantum chromodynamics and quantum electrodynamics.

From 1995 to 1996, Schmidt studied at Tel Aviv University in Israel as a recipient of a Minerva Fellowship. He spent 1999 to 2000 at Argonne National Laboratory in the USA having been awarded a fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Following this, he headed a DFG Emmy Noether Independent Junior Research Group at the University of Tübingen.

Since 2009, Prof. Schmidt has been an honorary professor at TU Dortmund University, where he is also chairman of the supervisory board of the DELTA synchrotron radiation source. He is active member of a number of different national and international committees, is chairman of the steering committee at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, and is a member of the European Spallation Source European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ESS ERIC) in Lund.

Prof. Schmidt advises the Kurchatov Institute in Moscow as a member of the International Science Policy Committee and chairman of the Subcommittee for Neutron Research. In addition, he is a member of the International Board of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT). At the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology (SIMIT), Prof. Schmidt is an honorary professor and co-chair of the Sino-German Joint Research Laboratory on Superconductivity and Bioelectronics. He is also a member of the council of the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) in Hamburg.

In June 2012, he was appointed professor of physics at RWTH Aachen University.

From 2012 to 2016, Prof. Schmidt was President of the German Research School for Simulation Sciences (GRS). In January 2013, he became vice-chairman of the advisory board of the Hochschule Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences.

He was awarded honorary doctorates by Georgian Technical University in Tbilisi in 2014 and by Tbilisi State University in 2015 for his commitment to German-Georgian collaboration in research and education.
