2025 Nobel Prize in Physics

Congratulations to John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis

The Nobel Committee honours their pioneering experiments on superconducting circuits, which revealed quantum phenomena on a macroscopic scale. Here at Forschungszentrum Jülich, we are building on these achievements by developing quantum computers and JUNIQ, the world’s first quantum computing infrastructure providing researchers and industry users with access to a variety of quantum systems.

Study

Unexpected Cause of Capacity Loss in Lithium Metal Batteries Identified

Researchers at Helmholtz Institute Münster (HI MS) of Forschungszentrum Jülich and the MEET Battery Research Center at the University of Münster have gained fundamental insights into the causes of capacity loss in lithium metal batteries in a collaborative project: Local dry-out of pores and the formation of resistive intermediate layers at critical electrolyte amounts is the cause of “cell death”.

David DiVincenzo named 2025 Clarivate Citation Laureate

David DiVincenzo is being honoured for his research in the field of quantum computing. The Citation Laureate award is given to scientists whose publications in high-ranking journals are cited particularly frequently.

Information

The priority of information combines Jülich research in three areas: simulation and data science in high-performance-computing (HPC), brain research, and research on bio- and nanoelectronic information technologies of the future. Quantum technologies are another priority at Jülich.

Energy

Jülich energy research concentrates on an energy system based on renewable energy. Scientists research technologies on all scales – from the atomic level right up to industrial innovations – covering the entire value chain from basic to applied research.

Bioeconomy

The sustainable bioeconomy is a biobased circular economy that does away with fossil resources and utilizes renewable resources instead. Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich are developing new value creation processes.
