Students and graduates: dissertations at Jülich

Students can write their bachelor’s or master’s dissertation at Jülich while at the same time being enrolled at a university. As Jülich professors are always appointed by a university in addition to Forschungszentrum Jülich, they have close links with universities, in particular those located in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is also possible to come to Jülich for a placement during a course at university.

PhD students: research at Jülich

Every year, Forschungszentrum Jülich supervises more than 850 PhD students from almost 50 countries who are working on their thesis at Jülich. More than a third of them are women. Almost one in three PhD students comes from abroad, thus contributing to the international character of Forschungszentrum Jülich, which we appreciate greatly. Forschungszentrum Jülich and the universities are close partners in training and supervising PhD students. A PhD at Jülich usually takes three years and the title is always conferred by the university where the PhD candidate is enrolled.

Jülich PhD students have formed an interest group referred to as "DocTeam" that organizes events and lectures and has its own little café. The gegenüber Students’ Lounge in the Central Library is a place where PhD students can exchange ideas and network over a cup of coffee. The café is also regularly used to discuss concerns that matter to PhD students in general. You can also make yourself heard as a guest of the doctoral committee. Undergraduate and postgraduate students are also welcome.

JuDocs – Careers Made in Jülich

Every year, the Board of Directors and the "DocTeam", the PhD students’ initiative of Forschungszentrum Jülich, host a ceremony and subsequent get-together on the third Saturday in June. On this occasion, Forschungszentrum Jülich officially celebrates the achievements of the current year’s PhD students and bids them farewell. Former PhD students of Forschungszentrum Jülich are also warmly invited to attend. The evening is an ideal opportunity to talk to new people, revive old friendships, and to become an active part of Jülich’s alumni network (JuLumni).
