Protein Structures

Proteins in All Shapes: Researchers Reveal Diversity of Protein Conformations

Proteins change their shape depending on their environment. A research team from Forschungszentrum Jülich and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf has now made these changes visible by means of solid-state NMR spectroscopy. This technique allows not only individual structures to be recorded, but also entire ensembles of possible conformational states.

Biotechnology

Bacterium Produces “Organic Dishwashing Liquid” to Degrade Oil

The marine bacterium Alcanivorax borkumensis feeds on oil, multiplying rapidly in the wake of oil spills, and thereby accelerating the elimination of the pollution, in many cases. It does this by producing an “organic dishwashing liquid” which it uses to attach itself to oil droplets. Researchers have now discovered the mechanism by which this “organic dishwashing liquid” is synthesized.

The priority of information combines Jülich research in three areas: simulation and data science in high-performance-computing (HPC), brain research, and research on bio- and nanoelectronic information technologies of the future. Quantum technologies are another priority at Jülich.

Jülich energy research concentrates on an energy system based on renewable energy. Scientists research technologies on all scales – from the atomic level right up to industrial innovations – covering the entire value chain from basic to applied research.

Bioeconomy

The sustainable bioeconomy is a biobased circular economy that does away with fossil resources and utilizes renewable resources instead. Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich are developing new value creation processes.
