Use-inspired Basic Research

Forschungszentrum Jülich focuses on use-inspired basic research. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach and investigates relations between research areas energy, information, and sustainable bioeconomy.

Energy

The scientific objective of energy research is an energy system based on renewable energy which will help make the transformation of the German energy sector ("Energiewende") a success as well as limiting climate change. The contributions to research and development made by the Institute of Energy and Climate Research (IEK) include energy conversion methods and energy storage technologies as well as the mechanisms of climate change.

Information

Scientists in the research area of information investigate how information is processed in biological and technical systems. The focus here is on brain research, basic research for future information technologies, and supercomputing.

Bioeconomy

This research field is concerned with contributing to a bio-based value chain permitting a sustainable economy. Research into a sustainable bioeconomy comprises work in biotechnology, plant research, and soil research (agrosphere). This work aims to support the transition from an oil-based to a bio-based economy and to contribute to the efforts to feed a growing global population.
