PLEASE NOTE: Road Closures on B56 from 21 November: Access to Main Gate and Aachen Bus Lines Affected

Construction work by state authority Landesbetrieb Straßenbau Nordrhein-Westfalen

The B56 road near Forschungszentrum Jülich is to be closed on one lane for construction work by state authority Landesbetrieb Straßenbau Nordrhein-Westfalen. The closures will take place over several stages. Two of the closures will affect the B56/L253 junction and will have a major impact on access to the main entrance gate of the campus.

The construction work will affect the route to Forschungszentrum Jülich via the B56, the L253, and the Waldstraße road, which is used by a large number of colleagues each day. The first of the closures will start on Wednesday, 21 November.

Closure on 21–22 November

Guests and colleagues taking the B56 from Düren will not be able to enter or leave Forschungszentrum Jülich via the L253 and the Waldstraße road. Employees of FZ Jülich are advised to use the Daubenrath gate, which will be open from 06:00 to 20:00 for the duration of the road closures. Please not that this gate is for employees only. Guests who need to register are requested to travel via Jülich-Ost and take the Hambach gate (please see next paragraph).

Colleagues travelling from Jülich/Aachen will not be able to access the main entrance gate of the campus via the B56, but instead must use the L253 and the Waldstraße road. Leo-Brandt-Straße is currently still closed due to the construction work on the main access road to Forschungszentrum Jülich. An alternative route is to take the Jülich-Ost motorway exit and then access the campus via the Hambach gate.

Bus transport: The construction work will also affect buses coming from Aachen (the SB20 and 220 lines). The diversions are expected to cause delays. The 219 shuttle bus between Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Rurtalbahn stop will not be affected.

Closure from Friday, 23 November to Monday, 26 November

Colleagues taking the B56 from Düren will once again be able to enter and leave Forschungszentrum Jülich at the main entrance gate via the B56, the L253, and the Waldstraße road.

During this closure, colleagues travelling from Jülich/Aachen will only be able to use this route when leaving the campus. To enter the campus by car, these colleagues are advised to use the Daubenrath or Hambach gates for this phase of construction work.

Bus transport: This closure will also affect the buses coming from Aachen (the SB20 and 220 lines), which will be redirected from their normal routes.

Temporary traffic lights in place on 19–20 November: No diversions necessary

One lane of the B56 will be closed between the Gereonstraße and L253 junctions on Monday, 19 November and Tuesday, 20 November.

On both days, however, it will still be possible to access the campus via the B56, the L253, the Waldstraße road, and the main entrance gate without taking a diversion. Temporary traffic lights will be in place to control the flow of traffic.

Guests and FZJ employees may experience delays, however, when entering and leaving the campus.

Further closures planned as of 3 December

Two further closures – one in Jülich at the B56/Gereonstraße junction, and one outside Jülich at the B56/Van-Gils-Straße/Altenburger Straße junction – are planned on 3–7 December.

Guests and FZJ employees will be able to enter and leave the campus as normal during this time. Temporary traffic lights will control the flow of traffic in both directions.

By car

Coming from Cologne (Köln) take the A 4 motorway (Cologne – Aachen), leave the motorway at the Düren exit, and then turn right towards Jülich (B 56). After about 10 km, turn off to the right onto the L 253, and follow the signs for "Forschungszentrum".

Coming from Aachen take the A 44 motorway (Aachen – Düsseldorf) and leave the motorway at the Jülich-West exit. At the first roundabout turn left towards Jülich, and at the second roundabout turn right towards Düren (B 56). After about 5 km, turn left onto the L 253 and follow the signs to "Forschungszentrum".

Coming from Düsseldorf Airport take the A 52 motorway (towards Düsseldorf/Mönchengladbach), followed by the A 57 (towards Cologne). Turn off at Neuss-West, and continue on the A 46 until you reach the crossroads "Kreuz Wanlo". Take the A 61 (towards Koblenz/Aachen) until you reach "Dreieck Jackerath" where you should take the A 44 (towards Aachen). Continue as described in "Coming from Düsseldorf".

Coming from Düsseldorf on the A44 motorway (Düsseldorf – Aachen) you have two options:

1. (Shorter route but more traffic) turn right at the Jülich-Ost exit onto the B 55n, which you should follow for approx. 500 m before turning right towards Jülich. After 200 m turn left and continue until you reach the "Merscher Höhe" roundabout. Turn left here, drive past the Solar Campus belonging to the University of Applied Sciences and continue straight along Brunnenstrasse. Cross the Römerstrasse junction, continue straight ahead onto Wiesenstrasse and then after the roundabout and the caravan dealers, turn left towards "Forschungszentrum" (signposted).

2. (Longer but quicker route) drive until you reach the "Jülich-West" exit. At the first roundabout turn left towards Jülich, and at the second roundabout turn right towards Düren (B 56). After about 5 km, turn left onto the L 253 and follow the signs to "Forschungszentrum".

Navigation systems

In your navigation system, enter your destination as "Wilhelm-Johnen-Strasse". From there, it is only a few hundred metres to the main entrance – simply follow the signs. The research centre itself is not part of the network of public roads and is therefore not recognised by navigation systems.
