GMR: The effect that revolutionized hard drives

The fact that hard drives are getting smaller and smaller while simultaneously being able to store an ever growing amount of data goes back to a discovery made at Forschungszentrum Jülich. In the late 1980s, physicist Peter Grünberg discovered that the electrical resistance of thin magnetic layers can be greatly modified through external magnetic fields. The GMR or giant magnetoresistance effect, which is used in millions of hard drives today, is based on the quantum-mechanical coupling of electron spins in the material layers. In 2007, Prof. Grünberg received the Nobel Prize for Physics for his discovery.

The Peter Grünberg Tour highlights spintronics - the research area that emerged from the investigation of giant magnetoresistance.
