Palestinian-German Science Bridge - Financial Support for Staff Exchange

The Palestinian-German Science Bridge is a pilot project financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF and implemented jointly by Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH and Palestinian Academy for Science and Technology PALAST to develop a joint research and education programme.

Forschungszentrum Jülich is one of the leading institutions in Europe involved in developing completely new industries, such as the bioeconomy, on the basis of its fundamental scientific research facilitated by its interdisciplinary and international approach. Key technologies in the areas of energy and environment, information technology, and brain research characterize its profile. More information can be found at

Faculty members of Palestinian universities interested in establishing a long-term cooperation with researchers in Jülich are invited to participate in the Research Cooperation Programme of the Palestinian-German Science Bridge.

The overarching and long-term objective of the Palestinian-German Science Bridge is to support the establishment of a science- and technology-related infrastructure in Palestine in the field of research and development, which will not only provide adequate job opportunities for highly qualified Palestinian scientists, but will also be of benefit to the whole of society in the long term.

Therefore, staff exchange activities should serve to

  • identify suitable candidates for thesis projects to be performed in Jülich within the Joint Education Programme, as well as their qualified supervision on both sides
  • coordinate joint supervision of BSc-, MSc, and/or PhD theses
  • establish a solid and lasting cooperation relationship
  • lay the ground for adequate support for returning alumni of the Joint Education Programme in setting up their own research groups at a Palestinian university
  • gradually integrate Palestinian faculty into research activities in Jülich (and its worldwide network of cooperation partners) and thus create a basis for exploiting relevant (national and/or European/international) research funding programmes in the future

How to participate:

If you are interested in establishing cooperation with a research group at Forschungszentrum Jülich, please check the project offers at If you find something matching your interests and qualifications, kindly contact the scientist(s) making the offer. Please use the template available at  Faculty Profile (docx, 321 kB) to introduce yourself and describe your qualifications.

In case of good scientific match and mutual interest, the Jülich host and Palestinian scientist can obtain financial support for staff exchange activities by jointly submitting a cooperation road map using the template available at  Roadmap (docx, 321 kB) . Activities eligible for support are

  • Short visits and guest lectures of Jülich scientists at Palestinian universities
(up to 3 weeks per year, i.e. up to 2.800 Euro per year)
  • Guest visits and lectures of Palestinian faculty in Jülich
(typically 2 to 3 months per year, i.e. up to 3.700 Euro per year)
  • Other activities suitable to achieve the PGSB objectives

Road maps should have a time scale of typically three years, and include explicit information on required funds for the current and the next year. Funds will be assigned on a yearly basis.

Fact finding missions (short term visits in either direction) to establish contacts and develop a cooperation strategy and road map can also be supported.

Road maps signed by the two partners should be sent electronically to PALAST and Forschungszentrum Jülich at the addresses given below.

Selection criteria for PGSB Cooperation Projects:

  • Scientific excellence of the proposed project
  • Profile of the Palestinian cooperation partner
  • Compatibility of the cooperation topic with the objectives of the PGSB programme:

    • Application-oriented project
    • Suitability for subsequent transfer to Palestine

Submission deadline:

Road map proposals can be submitted continuously and will be evaluated at regular cut-off dates.
