Bibliometrics - Recognising Trends in Science

The Central Library offers the institutes at Forschungszentrum Jülich and external customers the opportunity to have their publications analysed statistically in order to ascertain the perception of their scientific work in the specialist community.

Bibliometrics - What for?
Bibliometric analyses are an instrument that documents the publication performance of authors and institutions, as well as their response, in terms of the number of citations they receive. They provide information on how the specialist community perceives publications by a research group or an institute.

CHE University Ranking 2009/2010: The Natural Sciences

The Central Library's bibliometrics service provides bibliometric statistics for the current CHE University Ranking, which is published in the "Studienführer 2009/2010" section of the national newspaper "Die Zeit".

For the new edition of the CHE University Ranking, the bibliometrics team in the Central Library of Forschungszentrum Jülich generated data on around 18,000 scientists in more than 100 universities for the "internationally visible publications" indicator. The analyses focused on the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, geoscience, geography, and mathematics. Further information:

CHE University Ranking 2008/2009

The Central Library's bibliometrics service provided bibliometric statistics for the CHE University Ranking which was published in the "Studienführer 2008/2009" section of the national newspaper "Die Zeit".

Since it first appeared in 1998, the ranking compiled by the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) has established itself as a permanent feature in international university ranking. Every year, several selected disciplines of universities in the German-speaking world are analysed on the basis of a number of criteria and then compared in rankings.
For this edition of the CHE University Ranking, the bibliometrics team at the Central Library in Forschungszentrum Jülich generated data for the first time for the "internationally visible publications" indicator in the fields of sociology, business administration and economics. This indicator will also be incorporated into assessments of disciplines in future CHE university rankings.

Services

CONSULTING .... offers clients an information product that is tailored to their specific needs. Together, we come up with a package to suit your needs and perform a custom analysis. We provide comprehensive advice, identify possible solutions, and perform the job according to your specifications. We also offer workshops and in-house training on the topic of bibliometrics tailored to your areas of priority. We provide brief and compact answers to concrete queries, such as the number of citations of an article.
REPORT .... is a comprehensive detailed document (analysis and data section) on a complex issue. Topics include the publication behaviour of an institute and how it is perceived by the specialist community. A comparison between national and international institutions working in similar fields provides information on your position in the scientific community. Other aspects include an analysis of the development of country cooperations, discipline-specific development of institutions or countries, and the illustration of science networks. We deliver detailed documentation (analysis and data section) on a complex issue such as the impact factor of your institute within a subject area or in terms of national or international comparison.
ALERTING .... offers regular analyses on the concrete state of affairs, so that changes can be recognised as quickly as possible, allowing you to instantly react to positive and negative deviations. Alerting therefore serves as a strategic instrument for science management.
