New Helmholtz Postdoc at PGI-5

December 2015

Dr. Katherine MacArthur (PGI-5) has been chosen for the Helmholtz Postdoc Programme. The programme is aimed at early-career scientists who have completed outstanding doctoral theses in the past twelve months in Germany or abroad. Over three years, MacArthur will receive € 100,000 per year. Half of this amount comes from the Helmholtz Association Initiative and Networking Fund and the other half from the host institute.

The materials scientist studies novel nanoparticles for use as catalysts for hydrogen fuel cells. The 26-year-old uses electron microscopy (mainly scanning transmission electron microscopy, STEM) in order to develop improved methods for characterizing particle structure and composition on the atomic scale. Relating this improved structural information back to catalytic activity will lead towards better catalysts.
