Balloon-borne trace gas measurements in France

IEK-7 researchers have, together with colleagues from the Netherlands, Switzerland, Finland, France, Germany and the U.S., participated in an international balloon campaign near Orleans at the end of June.

The main aim was the comparison of different techniques of measuring trace gases important for climate (such as carbon dioxide and methane), retrieving profiles reaching from the ground to the middle stratosphere around 35 km. Research aircraft cannot reach altitudes above about 20 km, so bigger weather balloons (see photo) are the best opportunity for carrying out direct measurements there.
