Jülich expertise for ESA satellite mission

Prof. Martin Riese, Director of the Jülich Institute for Stratospheric Research, has been appointed by the European Space Agency ESA to the Mission Advisory Group of the FORUM satellite mission. FORUM is one of two remaining candidates for ESA's ninth Earth Explorer mission.

"Within the framework of FORUM, the cooling infrared radiation emitted into space, which is influenced by water vapour and cirrus clouds among other things, is to be completely spectrally measured for the first time," says Martin Riese. "These benchmark measurements would improve our understanding of the greenhouse effect and its amplification mechanisms and thus further limit the uncertainties of climate forecasts". The measurements should also contribute to climate change assessments, which are an important basis for policy decisions.
