Plasma–Wall Interaction of ITER Fusion Reactor Simulated on JURECA Supercomputer

Jülich, 30 September 2019 – Forschungszentrum Jülich and the ITER Organization, which is constructing the international nuclear fusion reactor ITER, are working together closely on investigating plasma–wall interaction and developing measurement systems. As part of a service contract, researchers from Jülich’s Institute of Energy and Climate Research (IEK-4) are conducting simulations to determine the extent of beryllium impurities during the various operating phases. Scientists expect the beryllium main wall of ITER to erode during operation, thus causing impurities to occur in the plasma, which will reach temperatures of several million degrees.
