Individual consultation and changed opening times

We are back at the information desk and ready to help you. You are bound to notice the sneeze guard that has been placed at the desk as a hygiene measure. We are also of course available to help you over the phone and via email – with no extra safety measures required.

The reading room is open from 08:00 until 17:00 during adjusted normal operations, with 19 workspaces available. You can also leave the reading room after 17:00 via the night exit. It will still not be possible to gain access to the reading room at night or at weekends. In addition to the reading room, we have set up 28 workspaces for you in the foyer. The foyer is open from 08:00 to 20:00. We also recommend using our reading garden as a place to work when the weather is good.

Reading room opening with safety restrictions and hygiene measures

  • Abstand halten – Mund-Nase-Bedeckung

Minimum distance: Please keep a minimum distance of 2 metres from other people in the Central Library. If this is not possible, please use a face mask.
  • Control on the number of visitors: When the necessary distance is maintained and requirements are met, 35 people can use the reading room at the same time, with 19 of them working at the designated workspaces. In addition, 28 people can use the individual workspaces set up in the foyer.
  • Disinfection: Please use the disinfectant dispenser we have set up to disinfect your hands.
  • Visitor registration: Please enter your contact details (name, institute) and the time you entered the reading room or foyer in our logbook if you are staying for longer to work there. Please use your own pen for this. The pencils that we have provided are meant for just one person. Please take the pencil with you after you have entered your details.
  • Returning books: It is simplest both for you and us if you return the media you have borrowed by internal mail. If you would like to return your books in person in the reading room, please place them on the designated table near the entrance.
  • Newspapers and popular science journals: Daily newspapers and journals cannot be read in the reading room. We are happy to send you scanned articles from the journals. Please use the literature request form for this. We have stopped ordering daily newspapers for the reading room.

Other rooms in the Central Library subject to restrictions

  • In the foyer we have set up 28 individual workspaces for you. You can use these provided that you adhere to the applicable safety requirements and hygiene measures.
  • The reading garden is open and offers additional individual workspaces.
  • Conference room 338 can be used for meetings of up to 10 people.
  • Seminar room 301 can be used for meetings of up to 6 people.
  • The stacks, lecture theatre, other meeting rooms, and the “gegenüber” students’ lounge remain closed until further notice.

Literature requests operating (almost exactly) as during normal operations

We are carrying out almost the same amount of literature requests, interlibrary loans, and scanning requests for you as usual. There may still be delays with interlibrary loans from other libraries.

Borrowing books from institute libraries and collections depends on the regulations in the respective institutes. We are accepting your borrowing requests and will carry them out with the institute collections if possible.

Training courses being carried out online

During the transition from basic operations to normal operations, we will generally be carrying out our training courses and consultations as web conferences or webinars. The technology we will use for this will be either Jülich’s BigBlueButton or WebConf, which is provided by Deutsches Forschungsnetz (DFN).

Please register for the training courses with our colleagues in the reading room and contact the relevant ZB employees for an individual consultation. You will then receive the login details via email.
