Opportunities and Risks Associated with Carbon Capture and Storage

Technology evaluation considering technical, economic, social and environmental aspects

Jülich, 27 June 2013 – Technologies that capture and store carbon dioxide (CO2) are still a matter of controversy in Germany. The transport and storage of CO2, in particular, face the most severe criticism. The debate about carbon capture and storage, or CCS for short, is often emotionally charged and not always rational. A team of scientists led by Forschungszentrum Jülich performed the first comprehensive evaluation of CCS technology to date. They found that those points considered most important by the experts were regarded most critically. These include cost efficiency and economic viability, as well as social acceptance. However, the researchers do not interpret this as a general rejection.
