New Measuring Technique Discovered by Chance

Jülich, 7 October 2015 - Test measurements that appeared to have failed rewarded biomechanists at Jülich with an unexpected discovery. They found a new method of measuring the vibrations of biomembranes. Such measurements are important for comprehensively understanding how these ultrathin and highly elastic separating layers influence the transport of substances in cells. Thanks to the new technique, researchers can record membrane vibrations in living cells for longer periods of time and more flexibly than was possible in the past.
