Jülich researcher presents mathematical model for friction on ice

Jülich, 9 December 2015 – What is good news for winter sports enthusiasts is bad news for motorists and pedestrians: how slippery ice is. A new mathematical model developed by Bo Persson from Jülich's Peter Grünberg Institute (PGI) now describes why ice is so slippery. The new calculations could be applied to develop skis and runners that slid better and also to ensure that shoe soles and car tyres don't skid so easily on icy roads.
