Climate Factor: Volcanoes

Eruptions at high and medium latitudes have unexpectedly strong effects

Jülich, 1 December 2017 – Another eruption of Mount Agung in Indonesia might take place again any day now. For a long time, researchers believed that only volcanoes in the Tropics, such as this Bali volcano, have a global influence on the climate. However, scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Forschungszentrum Jülich recently used computer simulations and satellite observations to show that volcanoes situated further north or south also affect the entire atmosphere of the Earth, depending on the time of year.
