Student Assistant (possibility to write a master thesis): Nitrification as function of nutrient limitation and stoichiometry
The Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Agrosphere (IBG-3) conducts research to improve our understanding of hydrological and biogeochemical processes in terrestrial systems, using a combination of experiments, modelling, and innovative observation technologies. Our research contributes to the sustainable and resource- conserving use of soils and water and to the quantification of the effect of climate and land use change on terrestrial ecosystems.
Your Job:
The DFG-funded Project “Nitrification as function of nutrient limitation and stoichiometry” follows the hypothesis that organic C limitation and N:P stoichiometry are important regulators of the nitrification-derived nitrous oxide and nitrate-formation with relevance for groundwater pollution and atmospheric greenhouse gas accumulation. Your task will be to establish experiments to evaluate the following topics:
- Relation between O2 availability in soil and the formation of nitrate and nitrous oxide;
- Microbial C limitation and its effects on nitrate and nitrous oxide formation;
- Nitrate and nitrous oxide formation in relation to the soil C:N:P stoichiometry.
Your Profile:
- Motivated student in soil science or related discipline
- Interested in strategies to mitigate nitrate and nitrous oxide formation in agricultural soil
- Soil physicochemical and biological background of nitrous oxide and nitrate formation
- Experience in environmental science laboratory work
- Ability to work independently after briefing
