PhD position: Structural determinants of synaptic transmission and plasticity in the human neocortex

The group „Structure of Synapses“ (Head. Prof. Joachim Lübke) at the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine INM-10, Research Centre Jülich GmbH offers a 3 years PhD-position (TvÖD E13/50-65%). We are interested in structural and molecular aspects of synaptic transmission and plasticity in the normal, developmental and pathologically altered rodent and human brain. We use state-of-the-art high-resolution light- and electron microcopy (Transmission- and Focussed Ion Beam scanning electron microscopy) and computer-assisted quantitative 3D reconstructions to develop quantitative 3D models of synapses embedded in the neocortex and hippocampus used as model systems. This models provide the basis for numerical and/or MonteCarlo simulations of various synaptic parameters still inaccessible to experiments.

In a second research project we are interested in the density, distribution and possible co-localization of calcium ion channels, neurotransmitter receptors and their subunits and synaptic transporter and other proteins at the so-called active zone at synapses that at the molecular level drive synaptic transmission and plasticity. This is achieved with single- and multiple pre- and postembedding immunohistochemistry on ultrathin sections or freeze fracture replica preparations.

The candidate will work with state-of-the-art light- and electron microscopic techniques including all preparatory work, modern immunohistochemical pre- and postembedding technique and computing. Requirements: completed master's degree in medicine or biology, knowledge in basic neuroscience, laboratory and computational skills, high motivation in learning new technics, ability to work in a team, good english language skills.

Forschungszentrum Jülich aims to employ more women in this area and therefore particularly welcomes applications from women. We also welcome applications from disabled persons.
