Civil Safety Research (IAS-7) is a new subinstitute within the Institute for Advanced Simulation at Forschungszentrum Jülich. The IAS-7 consists of scientists from mathematics, physics, computer sciences and engineering. The section focuses on pedestrian and fire dynamics and develops applied methods based on experiments and simulations.
Simulations of pedestrian dynamics are gaining increasing importance in several fields ranging from civil safety, architectural design optimization to 3D gaming engines. In order to investigate applied scientific questions within interdisciplinary projects, we develop and maintain several open-source software like the Jülich Pedestrian Simulator (JuPedSim).
JuPedSim’s main purpose is to simulate evacuation processes, analyze experimental data and visualize related trajectories and results. Besides, it is used in several projects to investigate pedestrians’ movements in complex buildings e.g. train stations as well as in large events. Furthermore, JuPedSim provides interfaces to other software especially to the software Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO).

We are looking to recruit a

Software Engineer

Your Job:

  • Maintenance and development of new features in an existing Software
  • Development of a user-friendly graphical user Interface
  • Planning, design and implementation of new algorithms
  • Close cooperation and exchange with various developers and users
  • Project-driven development of new Features
  • Supervision of co-developers and students

Your Profile:

  • Very well completed university studies in computer science (Bachelor)
  • Familiarity and experience with using modern C++ and Python
  • Advanced skills in modern software development with an affinity for GUI design
  • Good communication skills in spoken and written English
  • Willingness to work in an international, interdisciplinary and distributed team
  • Innovative person with experience in the design, implementation and maintenance of large software projects
  • Motivated and curious person willing to embrace new challenges and acquire
  • Basic understanding of mathematical modeling of pedestrian and traffic dynamics
