The Institute for Energy and Climate Research, Troposphere (IEK-8), investigates the chemical and physical processes in the troposphere that impact the chemical composition of the atmosphere. The global modelling group develops and uses the advanced Modular Earth Submodel System (MESSy) to explore the complex chemical transformations that affect air pollution and climate.

We are looking to recruit a

Software Developer, Earth System Modeling for Exascale Computing

Your Job:

Earth System Model (ESM) simulations with complex chemistry and at very high spatial resolutions pose high technical hurdles (“Frontiers”) which need to be overcome in the exascale computing race and in order to solve the grand challenges that society faces. You will enable “frontier” simulations of atmospheric composition with the cutting-edge supercomputers being built at FZJ.

Your tasks in detail:

  • Porting Fortran code for use on GPUs
  • Code vectorization of chemical ODE solvers (Ordinary Differential Equations)
  • Implementation and use of existing parallel and asynchronous I/O strategies
  • Performance Analysis and Load Balancing of Earth System Model Simulations
  • Data management according to FAIR principles

Your Profile:

  • a completed university degree (Bachelor) in computer science or a comparable qualification
  • experience in Earth System Modelling
  • Well-founded knowledge in code development and maintenance
  • Knowledge of High Performance Computing (HPC)
  • Knowledge of Fortran, Python, CUDA, OpenMP, etc.
  • High level of initiative, responsibility and team spirit
  • Good knowledge of English
