The institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Agrosphere (IBG-3) contributes to an improved understanding and reliable prediction of hydrologic and biogeochemical processes in terrestrial systems. At IBG-3, modeling of the terrestrial system in supercomputer environments and the analyses of large data sets constitute central components of scientific and applied research. IBG-3 is member of HI-CAM: Helmholtz-Initiative Climate Adaptation and Mitigation: two Sides of the same Coin’. The Postdoc will be embedded in project 4 ‚Nature-based storage systems’ of the ‚Net-zero-2050’ cluster.

We are looking to recruit a

Postdoc in the area of “Carbon sequestration potentials in agricultural soils in Germany”

Your Job:

Agricultural soils offer the opportunity to store carbon since they are highly managed. The main objective of the project is to quantify the storage and mitigation potential of various agricultural management practice options in terms of CO2 equivalents for different climate projections. We also plan the quantification of side effects on related compartments like nitrate leaching to groundwater. The investigated management practices will include e.g. increasing return of harvest residues, optimized N management, intercropping (greening), zero tillage and reforestation. The prognostic modeling using the Community Land Model (CLM) will provide maps of sequestration potentials including uncertainties based on ReKliEsDe scenarios and will be used by partners to develop a Soil Carbon App.

Your tasks in detail:

  • Collection and formatting of relevant model input data
  • Development of agricultural practice scenarios
  • Implementation of new plant functional types in CLM 5.0
  • Analysis and visualization of model results

Your Profile:

  • University degree in environmental sciences, physics or computer sciences with completed doctorate
  • Documented experience in programming with C/C++, Fortran or Python
  • Knowledge in the fields soil Biogeochemistry, numerical modeling and related disciplines is preferred
  • Ability to cooperate in an interdisciplinary and international team
  • Very good communication and organization skills
