The Ernst Ruska-Centre (ER-C) for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons at Forschungszentrum Jülich is a national facility dedicated to research at the frontiers of electron microscopy. It is part of a multilateral interdisciplinary initiative of 7 Helmholtz Centres dedicated to pushing the limits of ptychography, which a computational method to reconstruct microscopic objects. As a member of the moreSTEM research group lead by Prof. Dr. Knut Müller-Caspary, your research contributes state-of-the art electron microscopy experiments and methodology to the consortium of mathematicians, X-ray scientists and IT experts dealing with Big Data challenges.

We are looking to recruit a

Postdoc - Development of advanced electron ptychography approaches for materials and life sciences

Your Job:

  • Perform experiments with state-of-the-art aberration-corrected low-voltage STEM machines equipped with ultrafast cameras to record 4D STEM data of 2D materials and biological as well as soft matter specimens
  • Automate multidimensional data acquisition and evaluation to a high level
  • Implement and test novel ptychographic reconstruction schemes in close cooperation with mathematicians, X-ray scientists and IT experts
  • Acompanying simulations to validate results, to optimise acquisition and reconstruction parameters and to frame ranges of validity of ptychographic schemes in electron microscopy
  • Play a key role in the methodological development of momentum-resolved STEM techniques

Your Profile:

  • PhD degree in natural sciences, preferred in in physics
  • Experience in the field of Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM)
  • A background and strong interest in scattering theory, solid state physics
  • Programming experience in, e.g., Matlab, Python, C, C++
  • Experience in the field of structural biology/biophysics is beneficial.
  • Fluent command of written and spoken English
  • Most importantly: enthusiam to explore uncharted territory, develop and follow your own ideas
  • Ability to work autonomously in close interaction within a team
