The subinstitute “Civil Security Research“ (IAS-7) of the Institute for Advanced Simulation (IAS) investigates pedestrian and fire dynamics. Research and teaching are carried out in close cooperation with the University of Wuppertal. Together with the institute section “Nuclear Disposal and Reactor Safety” (IEK-6) of the Institute of Energy and Climate Research (IEK), the IAS-7 performs experiments on phenomena of smoke propagation.
In technical buildings and process engineering plants such as airports, underground railway stations, large-scale research facilities, extensive cable routes are installed. Cable fires therefore represents a crucial challenge. Pyrolysis, i.e. the release of flammable gases at high temperature from the cable material, is, among the actual combustion and heat transport, an essential phenomenon in combustion processes. The research project focuses on the experimental characterization of the pyrolysis process and the pyrolysis products in cable fires.

We are offering a

PhD Position in the Field of Fire Dynamics

Your Job:

  • Design and setup of an analysis concept for the pyrolysis gases
  • Operation of the existing experiment and investigation of various cable types
  • Comparison of experimental insights with data from fire dynamics models
  • Exchange with national and international project partners
  • Preparing scientific publications and mentoring of students

Your Profile:

  • Master degree in engineering or science
  • Strong cooperation and communication skills as well as the ability to work in with an interna-tional and interdisciplinary team
  • Interest in complex issues and fundamental research
  • Knowledge of experimental methods and quantitative evaluation methods
  • Interest in the conception and application of measurement systems
  • Programming skills (preferably Python)
  • Excellent oral and written English skills
