The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) at Forschungszentrum Jülich operates one of the most powerful HPC infrastructures in Europe, enabling scientists and engineers to solve highly complex problems by simulations. The department of Federated Systems and Data at JSC develops software for data analysis, data management and workflow management on distributed data and computer systems. The research group Earth System Data Exploration applies these tools to develop new analysis methods for Earth System data with a focus on Deep Machine Learning.
Specifically, as the lead partner in the interdisciplinary research project KISTE (KI STrategie für Erdsystemdaten, AI strategies for earth system data), we develop new AI applications and concepts to address relevant aspects in environmental sciences with a focus on air quality and weather information. These will be linked to the group’s activities to facilitate access to environmental data through large-scale web service architectures and high performance data processing. KISTE furthermore places a strong focus on the development of innovative e-learning modules about AI applications in environmental sciences.

Software engineer – Developer – Development of userfriendly data and software platform for environmental AI applications

Your Job:

A major research objective in the work in the KISTE project is to create a user friendly software platform that combines the access to environmental data sets as to state-of-the art machine learning software in order to process, analyze and use the environmental data. In order to create such a platform several workflows have to be designed and tested for their scalability in high performance computing environments. Therefore, we are looking for a software engineer to work together with the AI developers to create this platform. Your tasks will be centered around:

  • Development on distributed systems on a large HPC infrastructure
  • Development of a containerized AI platform
  • Benchmarking of AI frameworks and managing corresponding data sets
  • Front end development for the AI platform


Your Profile:

  • Master degree in computer science, mathematics, or physics, advanced degrees preferred
  • Proficiency in functional Python and/or Scala, microservice architecture, distributed systems, and API design
  • Curiosity to get involved with machine learning, algorithms, and applied mathematics
  • Very good communication and organizational skills
  • Good command of the English language and ability to improve if necessary
  • Experience in C++ with GPU and/or HPC is a plus
  • Experience with big data methods is a plus
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks is a plus
