Research data is the foundation of scientific discovery and an essential component of societal progress. Establishing the provenance of data, and ensuring its reusability and long-term availability increases the value, transparency and visibility of research.That is the mission of the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration: the association-wide platform develops and establishes novel concepts, services and workflows that allow annotation of complex and heterogeneous research data with metadata throughout the various phases of recording and processing. This preserves the long-term value of research data, or even increases it, e.g. in the case of interdisciplinary research fields such as machine learning and artificial intelligence. The implementation of the FAIR data principles and their integration into scientist’s research routines is one important milestone during this process.
Within the Helmholtz research domain Information HMC will be anchored as a so-called “Metadata Hub” at the Institute for Advanced Simulation - Materials Data Science and Informatics (IAS-9) at Forschungszentrum Jülich. Here we engage and actively involve the scientific community when creating tools, and adjusting standards for metadata and ontologies, ensuring our work adds value to the scientific endeavor.
Doing this, our work benefits from the unique and advantageous infrastructure and the interdisciplinary and data driven research environment of the Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Helmholtz-Association which offer unique opportunities for new synergies between e.g. experiment and simulation.

We are looking to recruit a

Software Developer - Semantic methods

Your Job:

Support our newly installed branch of the institute IAS-9 by contributing to the establishment and implementation of our software development activities. You will closely collaborate with software developers and data scientists within IAS-9 while maintaining also close contact with the scientific community in the Helmholtz research domain Information. Your tasks will include:

  • Modelling, development & visualization of terminologies, metadata standards, and ontologies in context of the Helmholtz research domains
  • Description of metadata and integration using knowledge graphs
  • Manual ontology matching and ontology alignment and (semi-)automatic ontology mapping e.g. using machine learning methods
  • Development of novel tools, and adjustment of pre-existing tools for visualization and modelling of domain specific ontologies
  • Dissemination of the tools and concepts developed within HMC. Support of training activities
  • Use case implementation in context of HMC
  • Close cooperation and exchange with other developers and users in the field
  • Contact point with and technical harmonization with national and international metadata activities (e.g. NFDI, EOSC & RDA)

Your Profile:

  • University degree (Master, Diploma) or similar in information/data/computer science or equivalent skills and experience acquired in practice
  • Excellent and proven knowledge of relevant script- and programming languages
  • Practical knowledge with semantic webservices
  • Knowledge of metadata standards and well-established databases are beneficial
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English
  • Ability to think analytically and abstractly. Willingness to work in an international and multidisciplinary team environment where developments are driven in a cooperative and team oriented fashion
  • Willingness to support scientists in with respect to metadata & research data management

We offer an exciting role in an up-to-date scientific context.The position is initially for a fixed term of 2 years, with possible long-term prospects. Salary and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TvöD). Depending on the applicant`s qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks, salary grade EG 13 TvöD-Bund.
