In order to address the climate change and achieve the internationally set climate targets, the energy supply will have to undergo major changes in the coming decades. What will the energy mix look like after the phasing out of nuclear power and coal, and the expansion of renewable energies? Which technologies will have to be introduced or further developed? What could a climate-neutral energy supply look like that makes economic sense and at the same time offers sufficient security of supply? How must the capacity expansion be planned in order to achieve this in a timely manner?

In order to be able to answer these and other questions scientifically, a large number of heterogeneous technologies is being examined in great detail in the research field of energy system analysis. The energy system analysis is faced with the challenge that the technology parameters assumed for energy scenarios are usually only available in a text form within scientific publications. The identification of relevant articles and the extraction of the required data through manual literature searches is so complex that often many existing data sources cannot be exploited.

We are offering a

PhD Position - Robust Forecast of Technology Developments in the Context of Capacity Expansion Planning Using Data Mining Methods

Your Job:

In the context of this work, technology data will be systematically extracted from interdisciplinary literature and used to map the spectrum of technology parameters assumed in the literature for energy scenarios. Your tasks include the

  • Application of ontologies (technical dictionaries) for a clear description of technologies and their characteristics relevant for capacity expansion planning
  • Selection and configuration of data mining algorithms using state-of-the-art software container technologies as well as their application to interdisciplinary literature and related data
  • Interpretation, preparation, and curation of technology information
  • Calculation of plans for the expansion of infrastructure capacities of sector-coupled energy systems and quantification of their degree of robustness by using a framework for energy system modeling developed at IEK-3
  • Statistical analysis of the influence of alternative technology parameters on the robustness of capacity planning
  • Ensuring the sustainability and continuous expandability of technology data by using the innovative data structures of the Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG) - a specially designed extension of the ORKG search functionality will enable the selection and comparison of technology data according to their characteristics
  • Automatization of the data mining and curating process in order to facilitate the future updating and expansion of the database

Your Profile:

  • Very good performance in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics or a comparable field of study
  • Interest in energy technology and energy management issues
  • First experience in data mining and data analysis
  • Good programming skills (preferably in Python)
  • Independent and analytical working style within a project team
