In the Institute for Energy and Climate Research – Techno-Economic Systems Analysis (IEK-3) we are investigating how we can achieve an affordable and climate-resilient energy system and how this could look like. To this end, we develop a wide range of highly complex and very detailed techno-economic models, which we use to take an integrated view of local and global energy systems in order to support the progress of the energy system transformation in the best possible knowledge-based way.

PhD Positions - Energy Systems Modeling

Your Job:

Support us in providing orientation knowledge for politics, industry and society for the success of the energy systems transformation by strengthening our team in the following areas, among others:

  • Renewable energy potentials as a nucleus for all approaches to solving the energy system transformation
  • Sector coupling and integrated infrastructures as backbone of the energy supply system
  • Worldwide trade with renewable resources such as hydrogen, power-to-liquid products, etc. to find the best transformation paths globally
  • Energy scenarios of the complete energy system as a foundation for knowledge-based decision support.

Depending on the subject area, your tasks may include

  • Conducting scientific studies in the context of energy system modeling (e.g. influence of climate change on renewable energies, integrated infrastructure modeling, holistic energy scenarios)
  • Modeling and implementation of energy systems in Python
  • Supervision of students
  • Participation in project meetings and cooperation with internal and external project partners
  • Presentation of your research results at (international) meetings and conferences and publication in relevant journals

Your Profile:

  • Above-average university degree in engineering (energy technology, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering and management), physics or a comparable degree
  • Knowledge in energy technologies and ideally in energy system modeling and energy economics
  • Programming skills, ideally in Python
  • Fluent English and/or German spoken and written
  • Distinct ability to work in a team as well as the ability to cooperate
  • Independent and analytical working style
